It's been a while

I haven't written a new blog in a while.  I normally don't get personal on here, I tend to write about music.

I'm not writing about strictly music this time.  Now, yes.  I could complain that Trent Reznor and crew were screwed over at the Grammy's.  It was really messed up that they cut his proformance.  Not only did they cut him, but they cut Dave Grohl, Queens of the Stone Age and Lindsey Buckingham.  NOT COOL!

Aside from that, I have found myself really enjoying the new Against Me! album, "Transgender Dysphoria Blues" and Mustard Plug's "Can't Contain It".  Both are really strong albums.  It's early in the year, but I can see these bing played a lot in 2014.

But on a personal level, my life is really good.  I have a great job that is still pretty new, I only started in September.  I am expecting to be an uncle for the 2nd time (the baby is due any hour now) and I have a fantastic girlfriend.  I really love her, she's amazing.

So far 2014 has been great.  I hope everyone is doing well.  If you're so inclined, follow me on Twitter under @Spyne98.

Peace, Love and Rock on!

Frank Turner...

... is pretty much my new favorite artist.  Go check him out.  I'm highlighting him on my show tomorrow.

Cookie cutter pop stars and real music

My mother still watches American Idol and every other TV show like that.  Personally, I think everyone on there sounds the same.  I'm not saying they can't sing, some of these people have amazing voices.  But, at the end of the day, they sound the same.  Everyone fits a cookie cutter mold of a pop star.  They might write a song and have their 15 minuets of fame, but none of them are memorable.

Without looking it up, can you name the last 5 winners of American Idol?  Can you actually tell me who the newest pop princess is when a song comes on the radio?  I can't tell a Britney Spears from a Kesha or a Taylor Swift from a Pink.  (That's a lie, if it's a song about a boy hurting the singer it's totally Taylor Swift.  Maybe she's the problem, not the guy.)

Anyway, Dave Grohl made a really good point a while back and I just discussed it with my mom.  In short, Dave Grohl said that people should just go and try music.  Try anything and don't let people tell you that you suck.  If Simon Cowell heard Nirvana before they were famous, I'm pretty sure he'd say they would go nowhere. If people heard Green Day or Nine Inch Nails or Muse or the Ramones on these shows, I'm pretty sure they would be told to give up.

But you don't give up.  If someone tells you that you suck, you play it again twice as loud and get noticed.  Forget the whole model of what a band or artist is and make yourself into something people won't forget.

That's real music.  It's being different.  It's being yourself.

New Spring Music

I'm loving this Spring already!  Aside from all the pollen, there is a lot to be excited about.  There's a lot of new music from bands like Streetlight Manifesto, Frank Turner, Sevendust, New Foud Glory, Authority Zero and Stone Sour.

Want to know the best part?  You can hear them all on my radio show as well as some old favorites.  I'll catch you Wednesday nights starting at 6pm (EST).

I'll catch you on the airwaves!

2013 and stuff

Might as well start the year off with a blog.

In case you missed my on air announcement, I made a New Year's Resolution.  I will never play the same song twice from Green Day, Linkin Park, Nine Inch Nails, Powerman 5000 or Lostprophets.

I promise to have new msuic this year too, so keep it tuned to my show (and just keep listening to Area24 in general).

However, this week I will have a special show lined up that will consist solely of live material from bands I have seen in concert.

Keep listening!
