Biography |
Steven Roues is a harmonica, double bass and guitar player, performing artist, songwriter and producer who has been actively and professionally involved in music for over thirty five years. He has worked in various capacities writing, recording or performing with some of this and the passed century's truly great artists. A few of these include, John Lee Hooker, Luther Allison, Carl Perkins, with whom he appears in the movie, The Other Side of Nashville, Vassar Clements, the great fiddle player who started out as one of Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys, Tom Chapin, Scott Ainsle, John Simon (producer of The Band and Janis Joplin), Pine Top Perkins (Muddy Waters Band), Bo Diddley, Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Group), Wayne Kramer (MC5), Darrel McDaniels (Run DMC), Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham. In the summer of 2002, while touring with The BluesJumpers, Muddy joined B.B. King onstage at the Montreux Jazz festival to close out the show. In addition to working directly with the above mentioned artists he has also had the opportunity to share the stage with Howling Wolf, James Cotton, Sam and Dave, Wilson Picket, Robbie Kreiger, The Chambers Brothers, Max Weinberg, David Bromberg, Robert Junior Lockwood, Robert Gordon, Sleepy LaBeefe, Joe Ely, Kinky Freidman, Buddy Guy, David Johanson, Sonny Burgess and the Sun Rhythm Section, John Hiatt and many others. Steven also played harmonica with The Little Orchestra Society of Lincoln Center as a guest artist for the NY premier of Peter Shickele's, Lincoln at Ease at Alice Tully Hall on March 23 2009. Steven currently plays and records with The UpSouth Twisters (formerly Lucky 7), The Roues Brothers, Finn and the Sharks, Joe Delia and Thieves and Big Jim Wheeler and Wheels of Fire. Although most noted for his harmonica playing, Steven also plays the stand up bass and guitar. He has written and published, alone and in collaboration, songs in many styles for performing and recording artists. Some of these styles include, Cajun-Zydeco, Blues, Rhythm and Blues, Country, Bluegrass, Jump Blues, Swing, Rap, and Rock and Roll. Steven's recorded work has had widespread commercial use. He has performed on a number of successful jingles including productions for AT&T and Pepsi and was also called upon to record all of the harmonica cues and bumpers for “House of the Blues.” Steven Roues also plays harmonica on 2 tracks on John Simon's Harmony Farm (Pioneer LDC inc. Japan Record No. : PICP-1090 Release : 1995.12.01). You can hear samples of these and other performances here. Steven attended the Mannes College of Music Ext. Div. From 1991 to 1997 and has a BA in music from Empire State College. He also studied Dbl Bass with Richard Samalin, John Dewitt, and Mike Richmond.
